Briefing on FY 2022 Statistical Budget Preparation 16 February 2021   Distinguished guests, resource persons from the Department of Budget and Management, and my colleagues from the Philippine Statistics Authority, a pleasant morning to all.  It is our pleasure to welcome all of you to the Briefing on the Fiscal Year 2022 Philippine Statistical System (PSS) Budget Preparation. This Briefing aims to further enhance our skills in the agency budget preparation and to guide agencies in the PSS in formulating own 2022 budget proposals for statistical activities.  We, in the Philippine Statistics Authority, have always advocated for more investments in statistics. We believe that providing the right information to the right people at the right time, is the key to identifying the right policies and programs that can help all of us overcome this crisis and steer the economy back to recovery. 

DOLE vows to free 500,000 children from illegal labor

SunStar + February 15, 2021 CLARK FREEPORT The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has renewed its bid to free more than half a million children who are into child labor. Lawyer Ma. Karina Trayvilla, director of the Bureau of Workers with Special Concerns, said that while DOLE has yet to receive latest official data on the number of young Filipinos engaged in child labor, the government is nonetheless bent on removing about 630,000 of them from such condition by 2022. We understand that one of the root causes of child labor is poverty, but we are doubling our efforts to eliminate this. We have encountered difficulties in the implementation of the program due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but now we are ready to intensify the profiling of children in the country, Trayvilla said.

Alfred Vargas In a privilege speech on Monday, February 15, Vargas decried the rampant incidence of movie piracy in the Philippines as he admitted that cases of copyright violations and outright online theft have victimized producers of films that participated in the recently-concluded 2020 Metro Manila Film Festival. Vargas produced the film “Tagpuan”, a romance drama, in which he starred in as leading man. The movie won third best film among ten entries to the MMFF. Speaking based on his experience, the three-term lawmaker lamented that movie piracy in the country had gone “from bad to worse”, adding that the crime has endangered “the survival of the industry and the livelihood of thousands of movie workers.”
