DOH: More cases of South African, UK, Philippine COVID-19 variants recorded

By CONSUELO MARQUEZ, GMA News Published April 18, 2021 1:54pm Experts have detected an additional 266 cases of the UK, 351 of South African, and 25 Philippine COVID-19 variants, the Department of Health said Sunday. With the help of University of the Philippines-Philippine Genome Center (UP-PGC), and the University of the Philippines-National Institutes of Health (UP-NIH), the latest cases were detected from 752 samples sequenced nationwide. In a press statement, DOH said, of the 266 UK (B.1.1.7) variant infections, 11 are returning Filipinos living abroad, 188 are local cases, and 67 are still for verification. The new cases also brought the total number of B.1.1.7 variant infections to 658. Of the total, eight already died, 204 recovered and 54 are still active.

DOH detects 642 additional COVID-19 variant cases

Department of Health (DOH) (MANILA BULLETIN) In a statement on Sunday, April 18, the DOH reported the detection of 266 cases of B.1.1.7 or UK variant, 351 cases of B.1.351 or South African variant, and 25 cases of the P.3 variant first found in the Philippines among the 752 samples sequenced last week. It said no additional case of P.1 or Brazilian variant was detected. The Health department said that of the additional 266 cases of B.1.1.7 variant, 11 cases are returning overseas Filipinos (ROFs), 188 are local cases, and 67 cases are currently being verified if they are local or ROF cases. “Based on the case line list, eight cases have died and 204 cases have recovered while 54 cases are still active,” said DOH.

More cases of COVID-19 variants detected in PH

(FILE PHOTO) Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, April 18) The Department of Health says more variants of COVID-19 have been detected in the country. A statement from the DOH on Sunday said there are 266 more cases of the B.1.1.7 variant, 351 cases of the B.1.351 variant and 25 additional cases of the P.3 variant. The B.1.1.7 variant was first discovered in the United Kingdom, while the B.1.351 variant was first detectedd in South Africa. The P.3 variant, meanwhile, was first found in the Philippines but is not a variant of concern. The DOH, the University of the Philippines-Philippine Genome Center (UP-PGC), and the University of the Philippines-National Institutes of Health (UP-NIH) reiterate that the P.3 variant is still NOT identified as a variant of concern (VOC) since current data is insufficient to determine whether the variant will have significant public health implications, the statement read.
