(Steve Hitchen) Close× FAA issues STC for Unleaded Avgas 29 July 2021 The US Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) this week issued a supplemental type certificate (STC) for a 100-octane avgas that contains no lead additive. Developed by Oklahoma-based General Aviation Modifications Inc. (GAMI), the STC for G100UL is valid for certain Lycoming O-320, O-360 and IO-360 piston engines, and has been roundly applauded by the US GA community. “This STC is a positive step as we seek a fleet-wide solution for an FAA approved unleaded fuel,” said AOPA President and CEO Mark Baker. “We look forward to learning more about how the STC will be used, and next steps in expanding the number of engines that can safely take advantage of it.”

AVweb The first quarter (Q1) of 2021 saw an increase in turbine helicopter and propeller airplane deliveries while business jet and piston helicopter shipments were flat compared to the same time period last year. According to the recently released General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA) general aviation aircraft shipments and billings report (PDF), piston airplane deliveries rose 7.3 percent and turboprops saw an increase of 18.3 percent in Q1 2021. 113 business jets were shipped over the quarter compared to 114 in Q1 2020. “The first quarter of 2021 shows progress for the industry,” said GAMA CEO Pete Bunce. “It is encouraging to see manufacturers begin to bounce back from the impacts of the pandemic. Although, we are not yet in the clear. The industry continues to face headwinds, especially with ongoing supply chain issues and pandemic related restrictions and constraints to global travel.”

(Photo: Loretta Conley, Robinson Helicopter) As the world progresses into the post-Covid era, billings for general aviation airplane and rotorcraft delivered in the first quarter soared 18.1 percent and 26.2 percent, respectively, from a year ago, according to data released this morning by the General Aviation Manufacturers Association. At 113 deliveries, business jet airframers were off one unit from last year’s first-quarter total, while the number of turboprops handed over rose by more than 18 percent year-over-year, to 84 aircraft, GAMA said. Piston airplane shipments were also up, with its 235 deliveries representing a 7.3 percent advance over the first quarter of last year.
