No remaining COVID-19 cases in Pelican Narrows, final infected person recovered: health centre

Before April 16, the last time Pelican Narrows had no active COVID-19 cases was Nov. 19, when the community’s first confirmed case of COVID-19 was marked as recovered. The community experienced a first wave through late November and December, slowing down to just one active case remaining Dec. 30 before jumping up again. An outbreak designation for the entire community of Pelican Narrows was called by the Northern Inter-Tribal Health Authority (NITHA) Nov. 23. That designation remains in effect for the community, despite the drop in cases. A total of 21 people remain in precautionary isolation in the community, each contacts to previous positive cases. No people from Pelican Narrows are hospitalized in Saskatchewan due to COVID-19, as per the centre’s released statistics.

Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation voters head to polls to elect new chief and council Most voters of the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation go to the polls to elect a new chief and council on Tuesday. The communities of Pelican Narrows, Deschambault Lake, Sandy Bay, Amisk Lake/Denare Beach and Prince Albert Urban will cast ballots for chief and council positions. A total of six candidates are running for chief and 58 candidates are running for 14 council positions. Nevertheless, due to a COVID-19 outbreak, voters in Sturgeon Landing will not be participating in the election. This means the results for chief and the council position for Sturgeon Landing may not be known for some days yet until it is safe for voters to cast ballots.

The change is part of a series of clinic reschedulings announced recently by the provincial government, owing to what the province has described as “delays in two deliveries of Moderna vaccine”. According to a provincial announcement, two shipments of Moderna vaccines – one of 28,300 doses expected to arrive March 22 and another 28,400 doses expected to arrive earlier this week – were delayed, with the first shipment arriving April 3 and the second shipment yet to arrive as of April 5.
