A number of schools across the north-east are expected to be over capacity by 2025, a new report has stated. Aberdeenshire Council’s education and children’s services committee is to discuss a report updating councillors on the progress of the local authority’s learning estate when it meets next Thursday. The most recent pupil census carried out last year has shown there are 20,971 primary school children, and 15,160 secondary pupils across the region. There are 33 fewer primary pupils from the year before, and it is the third year that overall primary pupil numbers have fallen.

A group of north-east parents are pushing to save a school from closure with just days until a local authority consultation on the controversial move closes. Aberdeenshire Council is considering amalgamating Dales Park and Meethill schools in Peterhead. The two could be combined into a single primary school at the Peterhead Community Campus, which is expected to be built by 2025. If the merger does go ahead pupils would be relocated to the new facility at Kinmundy.

Parents, carers and residents have taken part in a virtual consultation to find out more about the merging of two north-east primary schools. Aberdeenshire Council is currently carrying out a statutory consultation on an option to merge Dales Park School and Meethill School, both in Peterhead, placing them into the new Peterhead Community Campus. Council reports say the new building would be more environmentally friendly and energy-efficient.

Aberdeenshire Council aims to combine Dales Park and Meethill in Peterhead into a single primary school at the town’s new community campus, which is expected to be built by 2025. The site of the new £71 million facility, at Kinmundy, is around one mile from each of the existing schools.
