Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport reported that March was its busiest month since February 2020, with more than 3 million passengers going through the terminals.
The regionâs primary airport recorded 3,002,677 total passengers that either flew into or out of Sky Harbor during March, according to an April 28 report from the Phoenix Aviation Department. Thatâs a 25.2% increase from the 2.4 million people who went through Sky Harborâs terminals in March 2020.
Strong thunderstorms generated winds in excess of 40 mph and blowing dust in the Phoenix area on Wednesday afternoon.
The southwest Valley was under a dust advisory until 5:15 p.m., according to the National Weather Service in Phoenix, which received reports of a brief drop in visibility to 1 mile in blowing dust on the southwest side of Phoenix.
The blowing dust that prompted the advisory has dissipated so the advisory was expired at 5:15 p.m., according to the Weather Service.
However, blowing dust may still be created in other areas near showers, and that can make people difficult to travel, the Weather Service said.
For the first time since the start of the pandemic, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is reporting an increase in passenger traffic compared to a year ago.
Spokesperson Heather Shelbrack says comparing March 2020 numbers to the same month in 2021 show a 25% increase. She says cargo numbers are also doing well.
“Our cargo numbers for March of 2021 compared to March of 2020 were up 6.4% and that includes freight, Shelbrack said.
But she says traffic is still nearly 34% down when March 2021 is compared with pre-pandemic March 2019 numbers.
Certain businesses within the airport remain closed, but open depending on flight and passenger activity.
