In 1955, just four years before I was born, our modern form of citizenship ceremony was introduced. The history of New Zealand citizenship has been on my mind since Friday, when we held our first in-person Citizenship Ceremony since pre-Covid-19 times.
Officiating at these ceremonies is always a highlight for the council calendar, and the 41 new citizens on Friday were as delighted as I was to be celebrating in person rather than in isolation.

Eyebrows were raised when Todd Corporation sold off a large chunk of its property portfolio at the back end of 2018 to New Zealand-registered company NZ PropCo.
Questions were asked, and never properly answered, over NZ PropCo’s ownership and whether it legitimately scraped under the foreign investor barrier that meant the Overseas Investment Office (OIO) did not need to approve the transaction.
Shoeshine’s heard the deal could have been worth as much as $2 billion – at the least, it was a few hundred million dollars. Keen observers started to wonder how NZ PropCo funded such a large purchase.
