What happened to the New Bedford-Fairhaven Bridge plaque?

FAIRHAVEN   Thousands of motorists travel over the New Bedford-Fairhaven Bridge every day, but did you know there is a bit of a mystery regarding the granite pedestals on the Fairhaven side of the bridge?   If you look at the pedestals, also called plinths, clearly they have an inlay and drill holes, making it evident that a plaque used to be affixed to it.  But what happened to the plaque?  And what was written on it?   Some on social media theorized it was stolen by vandals. Others thought it was taken down to be cleaned and never put back.  “I have vague memories of bronze plaques. They ve been gone for decades,” posted Dave Despres.

And some don t even know they exist. The 30-plus concrete steps are used primarily by pedestrians to get to New Bedford-Fairhaven Bridge on Route 6 for shopping or work at businesses on Fish Island and Popes Island.   The stairs, as best as anyone can tell, have been there for at least 40 years. “I didn’t know they were there,” said Elizabeth Gomes, responding to the Standard-Times call out on social media about the steps.  Others also chimed in that they never knew about the steps.  “I didn t know they existed,” posted Arminda Ferreira.  Some remember using the steps decades ago.  “I used them when I was a teenager,” Elizabeth Boyd posted. “I would walk down North Front Street heading south. I loved the fact that you were able to gain access to the bridge without having to worry about cars. We had moved to the city and this is the route I would take to get to Fairhaven to visit with friends.

New Bedford protests: Activists committed to continued push for change

As Sam Cooke’s “A Change is Gonna Come” played, Jamie Anthony ran up and down the streets of New Bedford using her camera to document people of every generation participating in a Black Lives Matter march this past June.  When her legs got tired, Anthony, 23, sat on top of a car that was driving slowly with the protest and was able to really take in the different ages of all the people marching, which included people who had already marched for racial equity in their lifetimes.  “It was just an impactful moment because it was almost like we took a step back in time and I was looking at history repeat itself . but also seeing the triumph and strength and tears in my community,” Anthony said recently. “It was an amazing moment for me.”
