New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell told me during Wednesday s broadcast that he wants to honor Fred Kalisz, perhaps this summer, and would consider naming something after the late mayor. Kalisz passed away recently from the effects of COVID-19.
Kalisz s death came as a shock to many in the community. Most folks didn t know he was ill. The tributes and accolades poured into the station for days as residents recalled the impact Kalisz had on their lives. The stories were amazing.
Fred Kalisz was involved in so much that is positive in New Bedford. You ve heard how he was responsible for several new schools, restored lighthouses, economic development initiatives, and so much more.
“The silence from our administration has been frustrating,” Turgeon said.
Turgeon called into WBSM’s Barry Richard Wednesday afternoon and argued the claim put forth by Cordeiro on Richard’s Tuesday program that officers were informed of the investigation in a timely manner.
Turgeon said that, yes, there was a BOLO (be on the lookout) put out for the vehicle the suspect who fired eight shots in the officer’s residence was driving, but that there was no information provided to officers at that time regarding the nature of the crime.
“Our members were extremely angry that we weren’t all notified,” Turgeon said. “There was a BOLO, as the chief described it, put out over the terminals, but that was it. A guy at home or a guy on detail or a girl had no idea this was going on, this guy could have left that housing area, went somewhere else, and set up for his next victim.”

New Bedford was the scene of terrorist violence last week. A police officer s apartment was shot up; thankfully, nobody was injured.
The scene of the shooting was a government-funded public housing project. The police officer was living in that complex as part of a long-running program to make public housing for the poor safer for the residents. Across the country, public housing projects have been notorious locations for illegal drugs and the violent crime that comes with the illegal drug trade.
This attack on the home of a police officer was meant to intimidate the police officers on the ground. It was meant to intimidate the local elected officials who make policy in the city. And it was meant to intimidate the residents who live in that public housing complex.
This administration goes out of its way to regularly keep information from the press and the public. The public knows it too, and many folks have had enough.
