The New Mangalore Port Trust has been conducting road shows to introduce the Virtual Maritme India Summit 2021 (MIS 2021) being organised by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways from March 2 to 4.
NMPT Chairman A.V. Ramana during road shows at Kanara Small Industries Association and District Small Industries Association on Monday and Tuesday said the summit, with the theme, “Exploring the potential business opportunities in Indian Maritime sector and making Aatmanirbhar Bharat”, was being conducted virtually in view of the prevailing COVID-19 conditions. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the summit that was co-hosted by FICCI as the industrial partner.
Bill to convert Major Port Trusts into port authorities gets Rajya Sabha nod
The new law will clear the decks for market pricing of services rendered by the government-owned port authorities and public private partnership (PPP) operators at these so-called major ports to help them compete with private ports that are free to set their own rates.
Currently, the rates for services provided by the port trusts and the PPP operators are set by the Tariff Authority for Major Ports (TAMP).
Chennai Port Trust, Cochin Port Trust, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (near Mumbai), Deendayal Port Trust (Kandla), Kolkata Port Trust, Mumbai Port Trust, New Mangalore Port Trust, Mormugao Port Trust, Paradip Port Trust, V.0.Chidambaranar Port Trust (Thoothukudi) and Visakhapatnam Port Trust will be brought under a new law called Major Port Authorities Act.

Mangaluru, Jan 29: Bhagwati Prem dredger which had developed problems and had stranded at the seashore near Surathkal Guddekopla, has spent 15 months there. Now, New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) has, as a last reosrt, auctioned the dredger for about Rs 4.5 crore. Those who won the bid have not yet taken steps to move the dredger from here.
The dredger was on the verge of drowning in the sea during October 2019, after which the tug of New Mangalore Port Trust was used to rescue the dredger and anchor it near Surathkal. The dredger belongs to Mercator company and was in irreparable condition since April 2019 April and got stranded outside the NMPT anchorage. Another dredger owner by the same company, Tridevi Prem had also developed problems and drowned outside the anchorage in September that year.
