The UK will offer its world leading genomics expertise to help identify new variants of the virus that cause COVID-19 in countries in the Caribbean and around the world.
The announcement comes as part of a speech delivered by UK Health Secretary,
Matt Hancock at Chatham House. As part of the UK’s Presidency of the G7 this year, the Health Secretary outlined his vision for a stronger, more collaborative and effective global health system, not just in fighting the Covid-19 pandemic, but to ensure the international community is better prepared for future threats.
Countries will be offered UK capacity to analyse new strains of the virus through the launch of the New Variant Assessment Platform which will be led by Public Health England (PHE) working with NHS Test and Trace and academic partners, as well as the World Health Organization’s SARS-CoV-2 Global Laboratory Working Group. I’ve got quite a lot of news to bring you up to speed on. Right at the start, I wanted to tell you where we are with our vaccine programme.
I’m so proud of the team, who’ve now vaccinated 9.2 million people across the UK, that includes 931,204 vaccinations just this weekend.
And to put that into context – that’s one in every 60 adults in the whole United Kingdom vaccinated in one single weekend. It’s a mammoth effort.

South Africa became the first country on its continent to register more than one million Covid-19 cases after a new variant of coronavirus was identified.
Since the start of the pandemic, the country has recorded a total of 1,453,761 cases and 44,164 coronavirus deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University data.
The identification of the mutated strain of Covid-19 in South Africa prompted the UK to introduce a travel ban which includes the suspension of direct flights from the country.
