Zoeglossia names fellows for 2021 NMSU Conference

Zoeglossia has selected 13 disabled poets as fellows for their 2021 conference. The fellowship provides the poets with the opportunity to attend an annual retreat/conference and work with established writers who are also disabled. This year the event, hosted by New Mexico State University, will be held entirely online May 20-23 due to restrictions required by the Covid-19 pandemic. Chuck Schumer, the top Democrat in the Senate, said that he spoke to President-elect Joe Biden and they agreed that the stimulus bill that passed yesterday is just the beginning of what is needed. Schumer said at a news conference in New York on Tuesday that he expects that Biden will begin working toward another stimulus package in January or February of 2021.

Offering a little dash of team spirit in these days of isolation and canceled athletic events, New Mexico State University and Estas Manos Coffee Roasters have partnered to launch a roasted coffee called the A Mountain Roast. It’s rare, indeed, that colleges and universities delve into the branded beverage business, but the NMSU coffee product follows previous licensed products all benefitting the athletic department, including a Cabernet Sauvignon called Pistol Pete’s Crimson Legacy, and the first collegiate-licensed whiskey in the country, Pistol Pete’s Six-Shooter.

A Las Cruces man allegedly told police that he killed a man Saturday because he believed the man played a part in his son’s death. Santiago Rascon, 71, is charged with first-degree murder and two counts of tampering with evidence. Rascon allegedly admitted to fatally shooting Edgar Segovia, 29, while Segovia sat in a vehicle in the 4100 block of Broadview Road. Las Cruces police were called to the scene about 11 a.m., where they found Segovia – a 2020 New Mexico State University graduate – lying on the driveway in front of a sports utility vehicle. Court documents indicate Segovia sustained multiple gunshot wounds, including to the upper, right side of his body.

In Physics of Fluids, by AIP Publishing, researchers tested how five different types of mask materials impacted the spread of droplets that carry the coronavirus when we cough or sneeze. Every material tested dramatically reduced the number of droplets that were spread. But at distances of less than 6 feet, enough droplets to potentially cause illness still made it through several of the materials.
