Irish residents took more than 5.3 million domestic trips in the third and fourth quarters of 2020, down 19% on 2019
New Central Statistics Office figures show that Irish residents took more than 5.3 million domestic trips in the third and fourth quarters of 2020, a decrease of almost 19% compared with the same time in 2019.
Domestic trips increased by 290,000 in the third quarter of 2020 when compared with the same time in 2019, but domestic trips declined by just over 1.5 million in the fourth quarter of last year.
The CSO said that total expenditure on domestic trips in the third and fourth quarters amounted to €1.167 billion.

Planning permissions were granted for 26,224 apartments last year - the highest number since 2005
New Central Statistics Office figures show that more apartments than houses were granted planning permission in 2020.
Planning permissions were granted for 26,224 apartments last year, a jump of 33.9% on 2019 and the highest number since 2005.
Today s CSO figures shows that planning permissions granted for houses declined annually for the second year in a row in 2020.
A total of 18,314 planning permissions were granted for houses, a decrease of 6.8% compared with 19,651 permissions granted in 2019.
The CSO said that planning permissions were granted for 44,538 homes - both houses and apartments - last year compared with 39,242 homes in 2019, an increase of 13.5%.

New Central Statistics Office figures show that Covid-19 restrictions continue to have a significant influence on traffic volumes, public transport and travel through Irish airports.
These all remain at significantly lower levels than the same time in 2019 and early 2020.
Today s CSO figures show that car traffic volumes in regional locations rose by 6.9% in the week from February 14 compared with the previous week.
For the week beginning February 21, car traffic volumes were 3.9% higher than the previous week at regional locations and 4.7% higher in Dublin.
