Top of iconic Darwin’s Arch collapses, leaving pair of pillars in Galapagos Islands
The famed Darwin’s Arch in Galapagos Islands is now a pair of pillars.
The top of the iconic natural formation crumbled and fell at around 11:20 a.m. local time on Monday before the astonished eyes of passengers on a tourist boat, USA Today reported.
The country’s Ministry of Environment and Water announced the caving on social media.
“We report that the iconic Arc of Darwin collapsed,” the ministry said on Facebook, calling it “the result of natural erosion.”
It’s about a half mile from the main island of Darwin, both of which are named after the famed pioneer of the theory of evolution. The isle is the northernmost of the Galapagos Archipelago, an area well known as a dive spot for catching sight of schools of sharks and other species, the ministry noted.
