NYC Residents Moved to the Capital Region and Albany in the Pandemic

This story is available exclusively to Insider subscribers. Become an Insider and start reading now. The Capital Region of New York has seen a 214% increase in people relocating from the city and elsewhere. The influx of new residents has led to a housing shortage and apartments being rented sight unseen. Newcomers love the livability, location, and opportunity to get twice the space for half the cost. Last summer, real-estate developer Redburn Development received 2,000 showing requests for just 93 units at its latest redevelopment project, the Kenmore Apartments, an 1878 Victorian building located in Albany, New York. The building opened in fall 2020, and the rate of initial inquiries were more than double the requests for other newly available properties pre-pandemic, Jeff Buell, principal at Redburn Development, told Insider. He added that a lot of the building s interest was fueled by New York City residents looking to relocate.

GOP, landlords call for end to eviction ban

ALBANY — Republicans and landlords on Wednesday pushed back against a Democratic proposal to extend the eviction moratorium originally passed to provide relief during the COVID-19 crisis. The Assembly Minority Conference held a virtual news conference Wednesday morning calling on state lawmakers to end the moratorium that denies property owners the ability to evict tenants who do not pay their rent. A vote on the extension was originally slated for this week in the state Legislature, but on Wednesday, the vote was delayed until Monday. The moratorium was first passed in May of last year, early in the COVID-19 pandemic, in an effort to assist tenants who were impacted economically by the coronavirus outbreak.
