Thursday April 22, Earth Day, is a day for recognizing that stewardship of our precious region is a year-long privilege. Our lakes, farms and cultural history are interdependent, connected through relationships between people and nature over time. In other places, people cope with catastrophic floods, heat waves and forest fires; here in the Finger Lakes, we have an opportunity to address our climate threats proactively. Yes, we have weird weather, torrential rains and algae blooms on our lakes. But scientists and citizens are working together to understand the sources of HABs (harmful algal blooms) in Cayuga and Owasco lakes. Towns and landowners are working together to prevent heavy rains from washing out roads and flushing precious soils into creeks.

Tuesday, 20 April 2021 New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced New York City has signed a letter of intent  in partnership with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority committing the City to pursuing a joint purchase of large-scale renewable source of electricity delivered to the city, which could include Canadian hydropower to the extent selected or its equivalent. This joint purchase, which will power City government operations with 100% renewable electricity by 2025, will provide additional value to disadvantaged and energy burdened communities as well as all residents of the State, and be a dramatic step forward as part of the City’s comprehensive climate mitigation strategy to ensure the City makes a just transition to a clean energy economy. 

Biden Administration Nixes Hamptons Offshore Wind Sites Near Beaches, Fishing Grounds

1:58 The Biden administration announced that it will not lease two offshore wind areas off the Hamptons. The leasing areas were controversial to eastern Long Island residents and the commercial fishing industry. The Fairways North and Fairways South sites were planned just 15 miles off the coast. Southampton Town Supervisor Jay Schneiderman says the 800-foot-tall turbines would be a visual eyesore for public and private Hamptons beachgoers which the state of New York relies on for billions in tourism dollars. “I believe in [offshore wind],” Schneiderman said, “just site it further out. There s no reason why they can t go deeper, into deeper waters, you know, manage the visual impact.”

Diversity in ClimateTech program to support diverse founders leading clean tech startups Cornell University, Chloe Capital to fuel startup growth in New York’s Southern Tier 20-Apr-2021 1:10 PM EDT, by Cornell University Newswise ITHACA, N.Y. – Cornell University and Chloe Capital launched Diversity in ClimateTech, a new program to recruit, educate, inspire, and support capitalization in Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) and women founders developing startups with clean tech innovations. Women and BIPOC entrepreneurs typically face more acute challenges scaling startups including limited access to, and attention from, investors. Additionally, clean tech innovation usually experiences slower adoption rates among customers and therefore slower revenue growth. The Diversity in ClimateTech program is designed to support diverse company founders with partners and programs in New York state’s Southern Tier region.
