Catalyzed by a Cornell Atkinson Center for Sustainability grant and prompted by other Cornell eco-friendly research over the past decade like the Cornell Fuel Cell Institute and the university’s Energy Materials Center, the Standard Hydrogen Corporation (SHC) and National Grid announced plans March 11 to build the first hydrogen “energy station” of its kind in the nation.
The SHC Energy Transfer System will be built in New York’s Capital Region; completion is expected by late 2022.
Pending regulatory approval, the facility will be the first demonstration of Standard Hydrogen’s innovative, multi-use, renewable hydrogen-based energy storage/delivery system. It will be available to fill fuel cell-powered automobiles with carbon-free energy, while also fulfilling other energy needs.

The technology to create virtual power plants made up of distributed energy resources (DERs) is here. They can replace conventional, fossil-fueled power plants and enable a cleaner, cheaper and more resilient grid. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) delivered a boost in 2020. Its Order 2222 allows aggregations of DERs to participate in wholesale electricity markets through sales of power and participation in Demand Response (DR), capacity and ancillary services markets.

Nuclear workers plagued by leukaemia, cancers and other illnesses
Some workers developed cancer, leukemia and other illnesses. The same held true for workers at other nuclear facilities across the nation.
The number of potentially eligible workers across the nation is uncertain. Likewise, the number of employees potentially affected at West Valley could be in the thousands when accounting for temporary workers.
“This was particularly troubling if the same workers were hired repeatedly as temporaries and received high doses each time,”
In addition, the exposure of growing numbers of individuals increased the possibility of genetic consequences for the entire population.”
Federal program has paid former employees $20.3 million in compensation. Other claims are pending and still more workers are unaware of the program.
The solutions to both New York’s affordable housing shortage and the global climate emergency are inextricably linked. That is why the New York State Association for Affordable Housing (NYSAFAH) supports a bill in the Legislature that would establish a Sustainable Affordable Housing Incentive Program to help create more energy efficient affordable housing in New York.
Committing $50 million to the program would significantly reduce the carbon footprint of affordable housing projects and help New York State achieve its climate change goals as outlined under the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA). It would also build on existing efforts from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) to create net-zero affordable housing projects by making funding more efficient and reliable for the industry and the marketplace.
