Supporters, Opponents Of Pandemic Health And Safety Bill Await Action By Cuomo

Pete Dzintars / Flickr Supporters of a measure to ensure better workplace safety during future pandemics are urging Gov. Andrew Cuomo to sign the bill, which was passed by both houses of the state Legislature this week. The bill known as the New York Health and Essential Rights, or HERO, Act requires that the state health and labor departments design minimum standards for health and safety during outbreaks of airborne viruses and all infectious disease outbreaks. It mandates enough personal protective equipment for all employees, and that there be provisions for safe social distancing and standard protocols for disinfecting work spaces.

Putnam Hospital in Carmel lays off nurses as COVID remains a threat

Hero to zero. That s the mood at Putnam Hospital Center, said Nurse Maura Rooney, after the New York State Nurses Association was notified last week that 11 Putnam nurses, including a 30-year veteran, would be laid off. Those impacted were notified on April 7. The morale of the hospital right now is in like disbelief, said Rooney, a 15-year nurse at the hospital in Carmel. And so low, because we did everything that we could possibly do for our community and the hospital. We were heroes. Now they re laying us off. As large numbers of COVID-19 patients entered New York hospitals, Rooney said nurses in surgical services inventories, the ambulatory operating room and post-anesthesia care unit were temporarily moved to areas like the emergency room and intensive care unit.
