Biofuels - DOE Invests $35 Million to Reduce Carbon Footprint of Biofuel Production - Renewable Energy Magazine, at the heart of clean energy journalism

Monday, 17 May 2021 The U.S. Department of Energy last week announced $35 million in funding that will help slash carbon emissions and scale up the volume and efficiency of renewable biofuel. The 15 awarded research projects are housed at colleges, universities, and labs across nine states and will advance new technologies to decarbonize biorefining processes used across the energy, transportation, and agriculture sectors. The funding awards are supported by DOE’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy. These investments in advancements in clean energy technology, will help America achieve the Biden-Harris administration’s goal of 100% clean energy economy and net-zero emissions by 2050. “Biofuel is a powerful tool in the clean energy toolkit that has immense potential to power our ships and airlines with zero carbon emissions,” said Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm. “DOE is investing in research to reduce emissions and maximize the availability of efficien

Electric/Hybrid - Ford urges agreement and action on UK-wide electrification roadmap ahead of COP26 - Renewable Energy Magazine, at the heart of clean energy journalism

Ford Focus Electric. Since February, Ford has announced significant investments across Europe as it goes all-in on electrification, committing its entire passenger vehicle range being all-electric by 2030, and to the majority of its commercial vehicles sales being all-electric or plug-in hybrid in the same timeframe. However, the company says that individual actions are not enough and that a coordinated effort is needed to help consumers move to an electrified future. “At Ford, we’re putting our plan into action” said Stuart Rowley, president, Ford of Europe. “In the UK, the electrification transition is underway, but we will not achieve the government’s 2030 target organically. We need a plan, supporting the rollout of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, in operation ahead of November’s critical COP26 climate summit. The scale of the challenge requires a partnership between all the key stakeholders – government, auto industry, energy providers, local authorities

PV - Local solar and battery storage can save Illinois billions, new grid-planning analysis shows - Renewable Energy Magazine, at the heart of clean energy journalism

Courtesy of NREL. Additionally, based on current electricity consumption patterns in the state, a local solar and battery storage strategy deployed on this scale would shave $15 off Illinois households’ monthly electricity bills by 2030 and $39 off by 2050. Several different pieces of legislation, including Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker’s energy bill, the Consumers and Climate First Act, are under consideration, and the solar industry is hopeful that the Illinois legislature will act on an omnibus clean energy package before the state’s legislative session adjourns on May 31st. In Illinois, there is broad agreement that a thoughtful expansion of renewable energy needs to happen. The challenge is working out the details in a manner that is good for ratepayers and the grid and addresses all the various stakeholders’ concerns.

Solar Thermal Electric - New partnership between Synhelion and Wood accelerates market entry of solar fuels - Renewable Energy Magazine, at the heart of clean energy journalism

Courtesy of Synhelion. The two companies are drawing on their strengths – Synhelion’s innovative solar technology and Wood’s industrially established chemical process technology for syngas generation. Synhelion has developed a trailblazing solar thermal process for the production of synthetic fuels. The process of the ETH Zurich spin-off is based on a technology to efficiently convert concentrated sunlight into process heat. In 2019, Synhelion produced the first-ever solar fuel from air and sunlight under real field conditions. Since then, Synhelion has scaled up the individual components of this technology to industrial size and developed further processes for the production of synthetic fuels. The partnership with Wood will bring together Synhelion’s solar technologies with Wood’s own novel hydrogen reforming reactor technologies further accelerating the path to market maturity.
