Vilsack: Work on climate-smart ag should begin before next farm bill

-The Hagstrom Report Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said that work on climate-smart agricultural policies should take place in the next two years so that Congress has experiences from which to learn before writing the 2023 farm bill. In a speech made online to the Commodity Classic, the annual gathering of corn, soybean wheat and sorghum growers, Vilsack said that current conservation programs should be refocused on climate-smart agriculture and also said that a carbon bank that benefits farmers could also give Congress an idea of what needs to be included in a new five-year farm bill. Vilsack said USDA could use the next two years for “test marketing a lot of these concepts.”

House Biofuels Caucus introduces two bills to grow biofuels markets The co-chairs of the US House Biofuels Caucus introduced two new pieces of legislation to increase access to biofuels and to recognize fully their environmental benefits. Rep. Cindy Axne (IA-03) and Rep. Rodney Davis (IL-13) led introduction of the Renewable Fuels Infrastructure Investment and Market Expansion Act, which would expand access to higher blends of biofuels. Rep. Dusty Johnson (SD-AL) was the lead sponsor of the Adopt GREET Act, which will direct the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to update its greenhouse gas modeling for ethanol and biodiesel. Senators had earlier introduced their versions of the legislation. (Earlier post.)
