Now is a unique opportunity to reinvent rural Ireland

March 12, 2021 7:41 am The Covid-19 pandemic has “presented a unique opportunity” to reinvent and reimagine rural communities, according to MEP Colm Markey. The Midlands North West MEP was speaking in the European Parliament during a debate yesterday (Thursday, March 11) with the European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development Janusz Wojciechowski on the long-term vision for rural areas. Commenting afterwards, the Fine Gael MEP said: “Generations of skilled and talented people have left rural areas to pursue opportunities elsewhere. The pandemic has taught us that many can remain in their own communities by taking advantage of remote or blended working. We can reverse the ‘brain drain’ and turn it into the ‘brain gain’.

Strong solar growth could save €106m per year in Ireland

Published: 4 Mar 2021, 12:47 By: Image: Elgin Energy. Solar growth in Ireland could provide an annual saving of €21 (£18) per citizen, according to a new report from international advisory firm, AFRY. It modelled three scenarios with different levels of solar and wind, to establish the most effective way of meeting the Government’s target of 70% renewable electricity by 2030. Within these, the highest solar scenario saw a total €106 million (£91.5 million) annual saving, as there are significant benefits from a diversified portfolio of generation assets. If Ireland is to install enough solar to power 1.2 million households as shown in this high penetration scenario, fewer less efficient fossil fuel generators will be required during the daytime, when operational demand is at its highest. This also leads to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, which fall 8% in the high solar scenario.

NTR acquires 54MW of co-located solar and storage in Wexford

Published: 24 Feb 2021, 12:47 By: Image: NTR. Investor and asset manager NTR has acquired a 54MW portfolio of co-located solar and storage projects in Co. Wexford, Ireland from RES. It is made up of two battery storage projects with a combined capacity of 25MW along with 29MW of solar PV. The solar projects were awarded 16-year Contracts for Difference (CfD) tariffs within Ireland’s first Renewable Electricity Support Scheme (RESS) auction in August 2020. Co-located solar and battery storage projects can bring some “much-needed diversity of renewables technology onto the Irish grid,” said Manus O‘Donnell, chief investment officer at NTR, adding that combining the technology was particularly effective given the ability to share a grid connection and economies of scale.

Growing industry concern as lost wind energy rises to nearly 11 5% of total production

February 18, 2021 12:20 pm Lost wind energy rose to nearly 11.5% of total production in 2020, according to Wind Energy Ireland’s annual report. Despite strong results overall, there is “growing industry concern” over the amount of wind energy that is lost every year. In 2020, the amount lost was more than 1.4 million MWh of electricity, nearly double the figure for 2019. This is just under 11.5% of total production and enough to power more than 300,000 homes. Wind energy is lost when EirGrid, as the transmission system operator, instructs a wind farm to produce less electricity or even to shut down entirely because the grid is not strong enough to cope with the volumes of power being produced.
