Dana Young: Resiliency while facing a pandemic

As I’ve shared before, our students and employees at Treasure Valley Community College have been incredibly resilient in responding to the challenges we all faced this past year due to COVID-19. We have redesigned classes to allow for more online options, reconfigured classroom space to provide social distancing and reimagined campus events to include creative student activities like outdoor yoga, make-and-take activities and grab-and-go treats. But admittedly, we are anxious for the return of concerts, dances and group gatherings. One of the events we especially missed again this year is our annual TVCC Foundation Donor Recognition & Scholarship Recipient event. Instead of an in-person event complete with delicious desserts as we’ve enjoyed in the past, we held a virtual recognition on Thursday night. Complete with an online tour of the new Career & Technical Education Building, the evening was a great way to virtually showcase our campus, students and donors.

6 vye for 4 seats on Treasure Valley Community College board

ONTARIO Six candidates are running for four seats that are opening up on the Treasure Valley Community College Board of Directors in the upcoming 2021 District Director Election on May 18. Two of the seats, Positions 1 and 6, will see two-way races with no incumbent candidates; while only incumbents, Betty Carter and Roger Findley, respectively filed for Positions 2 and 4. In the two-way race for Position 1, Cydney Cooke will face off with Dirk De Boer. In the two-way race for Position 6, Christopher Plummer will face off with Ken Hart. Position 2 is a two-year seat, the rest are four-year commitments. Candidates were all invited to participate in the Argus Observer’s introduction to the community. The deadline was noon on Monday.

Board OKs tuition hike for TVCC

ONTARIO The Treasure Valley Community College Board voted to raise tuition at the college by $3 per credit at the board meeting on Tuesday. An increase in tuition had been discussed for several months by the board as well as among community colleges, with some of the other colleges backing out, according to TVCC President Dana Young. However, she told the board it was better to have small increases at a time rather than having one big jump. The decision also came after a survey of students was taken by members of the Associated Student Government, with the results reported during the meeting. Hannah Berger, president of the student body, said the large majority of students surveyed said they would support or strongly support the proposed tuition increase.
