Why Adventist Mission Needs Ingenuity | Adventist World

3 Min Read Published on: 13 hours ago Maybe we should ask the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to supervise things here on earth. After all, they sure do well operating on another planet!  On April 19, 2021, the world watched as the four-pound (1.8 kg), 19.3-inch (49 cm) tall rotorcraft, dubbed the Ingenuity Mars Helicopter, lifted off the dusty rocks of the Martian surface. Breathlessly, NASA’s Ingenuity team at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California, United States, monitored the action 176 million miles (284 million km) away, as Ingenuity whirled up to an altitude of 10 feet (3 m), hovered there for 30 seconds, and returned to the Mars surface.

Having proven that powered, controlled flight is possible on the Red Planet, the Ingenuity experiment will soon embark on a new operations demonstration phase, exploring how aerial scouting and other functions could benefit future exploration of Mars and other worlds. This new phase will begin after the helicopter completes its next two flights. The decision to add an operations demonstration is a result of the Perseverance rover being ahead of schedule with the thorough checkout of all vehicle systems since its Feb 18 landing, and its science team choosing a nearby patch of crater bed for its first detailed explorations. With the Mars Helicopter s energy, telecommunications, and in-flight navigation systems performing beyond expectation, an opportunity arose to all

On April 19th, 2021, history was made. Ingenuity proved, autonomous, powered controlled flight was possible on another planet [1]. The mission was to fly in the thin Martian air, which is just about 1% of Earth’s atmospheric pressure was a success and the scientists have been bold enough to try three times, with each time Ingenuity has flown higher and longer. The success of these flights is steadily providing us the confidence and hope of more successful aircraft missions to other planets. The data provided by the Ingenuity flights is crucial for future drone designs and understanding the geology of the Mars. Ingenuity is complementing Perseverance with its ability to fly directly over craters and obstacles and provide valuable images something that Persevera
