Location: St. Vincent and the Grenadines
Event: St. Vincent’s National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) confirmed several eruptions at the La Soufriere volcano with ash plumes up to 20,000 feet on April 9. The ash cloud is moving east from St. Vincent with ash fall reported as far southeast as Argyle International Airport, which is located approximately 12 miles away. Heavy ash fall with poor visibility is reported in the evacuation zone, and the Seismic Research Center at the University of the West Indies (UWI) reports the ash column is falling back down around the volcano and surrounding area. Communities across mainland St. Vincent will experience varying degrees of ashfall. The Grenadines may also be affected. Mandatory evacuation for all residents in the red zone continues.
Location: Barbados
Event: The Barbados Meteorological Services issued a severe volcanic ash warning for the island on April 10, 2021. A thick plume of volcanic ash from the La Soufriere Volcano in St Vincent, which erupted on April 9, is currently affecting the island. Satellite imagery of the volcano continues to show a thick plume of ash traveling easterly towards Barbados. There have been reports of ash fall across the island, and Saharan dust haze also remains present, which will continue to reduce visibility and may cause respiratory problems, especially for those persons with pre-existing respiratory issues or allergies.
The Grantley Adams International Airport in Barbados is closed until at least 6 a.m. on April 11, 2021, due to the volcanic ash.
Location: St. Vincent and the Grenadines
Event: Due to the increased seismic activity at the La Soufriere volcano in St. Vincent, the Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines has issued an Evacuation Order of all premises in the areas designated in the Red Zones on the Northeast and Northwest of St. Vincent.
The alert level has been raised to “Red” as a result of the increased activity. The Caribbean Disaster Management Agency (CDEMA) and St. Vincent’s National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) will continue monitoring the situation closely. NEMO has activated its National Emergency Operations Center.
Actions to Take:
Demonstration Alert: Rome (Italy), Anti-COVID Lockdown and Anti-COVID Vaccine Protests
Demonstration Alert – U.S. Embassy Rome, Italy – April 7, 2021
Event: The potential for anti-COVID lockdown and anti-COVID vaccine demonstrations exists in many cities throughout Italy. On April 6, 2021 outside Piazza di Montecitorio in Rome, groups of protestors faced off and clashed with police who responded with crowd control tactics and arrests. Italian authorities expect the potential for these kinds of demonstrations to continue in the coming weeks and possibly longer. There is also the potential for unsanctioned demonstrations, fueled by social media, that can begin with little or no notice.
