FAIRFIELD, CT Less than 24 hours after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended the Pfizer coronavirus vaccine for 12- to 15-year-olds, Matthew Loiz got his first dose. I was pretty excited to get it, the 13-year-old from Shelton said just minutes after receiving the shot Thursday at a vaccination site in Fairfield. I m just glad that more and more people are getting vaccinated.
Over 71 percent of Connecticut residents aged 18 and up had received at least one dose as of Tuesday, and more than 56 percent were fully vaccinated, the highest rate in the nation. Parents and legal guardians of the roughly 170,000 children in the newly approved age group can sign their kids up for an appointment or visit any clinic that accepts walk-ins and offers Pfizer.

FAIRFIELD, Conn. In recognition of national Better Hearing & Speech Month (BHSM), Sacred Heart University’s speech-language pathology (SLP) program is sharing an important message. With an estimated 10% to 30% of COVID-19 survivors experiencing “long-haul” symptoms including cognitive issues and swallowing difficulties speech-language pathologists (SLPs) at SHU are encouraging the public to seek care from qualified experts who can help them regain their functioning and quality of life.
The pandemic has posed many challenges for society, few more persistent or vexing than the difficulties many people experience for months after contracting COVID-19. From brain fog, to problems eating and drinking, to speech and language problems, these difficulties can affect someone’s return to work, the ability to take care of family, and overall recovery.

A 13-year-old teenager from Shelton was the first in Connecticut of his age group to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. Eligibility expanded to young people between the ages of 12 and 15 on Thursday.
Matthew Loiz got his Pfizer vaccine at the St. Vincent’s Medical Center mega vaccine site at Sacred Heart University.
Loiz said he’s happy to get the shot, and has a message for teens and those vaccine hesitant.
“I would just say get vaccinated because the more people that we can vaccinate or help, the sooner we can get COVID over and everybody can go back to normal,” Loiz said.
