FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Eric Knowles said there is strength in numbers, and this is why the new South Florida Black Prosperity Alliance will be making a difference.
Knowles has been leading the Miami-Dade Chamber of Commerce since 2014. On Thursday, he held the microphone outside of the Urban League of Broward County’s Sunshine Health Community Empowerment Center in Fort Lauderdale.
“We have to stand together . Black businesses matter, Black education matters, Black health matters, Black seniors matter 365 days a year, not just 28 days in February,” Knowles said referring to Black History Month.
“I thought I was going to be able to get it from a traditional lender but it didn’t happen,” Jessica Modkins said.
Modkins is the president of Hip Rock Star Advertising. She says that despite having accounts at two large well-known banks, she had to look elsewhere for a company to administer a loan from the SBA’s PPP program.
“I had direct access to account managers, VPs at the bank, but it did not work. It didn’t. So we ended up going with another lender out on the West Coast that I would not think of as a banking institution. It ended up being a lender for the loan that administrated it for us,” Modkins said.

Commissioners will each appoint one member to the task force that will represent: Broward Workshop, the Broward League of Cities, Hispanic Unity of Florida, School Board of Broward County, Broward County Sheriff, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), Urban League of Broward County, Office of the State Attorney for the Seventeenth Judicial Circuit of Florida, Office of Public Defender for the Seventeenth Judicial Circuit of Florida, Black Lives Matter, New
