I want to be part of that growing industry. It’s inspiring what the human mind can achieve,” said Jeff, 18, who plans to attend Florida Atlantic University. Born in Haiti, Jeff and his sister, Jennifer, and father, Wilmann, moved to Brooklyn, New York, when he was 8 years old. The three came to Palm Beach County in 2008 and settled in Lake Worth Beach.

Famous for their white sandy beaches, Florida and the Caribbean are slowly being infested by the toxic algae, creating a brown stream of smelly seaweed. The level of nitrogen has increased by 111% which is both “a big surprise” and “a big problem,” according to Florida Atlantic University professor Brian Lapointe. The excessive nitrogen levels are a result of human activity, which have greatly altered global levels of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus cycles, according to Lapointe.

This class of scholars includes aspiring engineers, accountants, teachers and environmental activists, all of whom will be attending stand out colleges and universities, including Dartmouth College, University of Pennsylvania, Boston College, Indiana University and other top institutions across the country.
