ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) A 12-year-old boy accused of joining a 14-year-old girl in a shootout with an assault weapon and shotgun against Florida deputies from a home they had broken into earlier this week will be held for 21 days at a secure detention facility pending a hearing, a judge ordered Thursday.
During a virtual hearing, Judge Michael Orfinger told the boy that he was facing charges of attempted first degree murder of a law enforcement officer and armed burglary of a dwelling.
“I ve reviewed the arrest report and based on my review, there is probable cause that these acts occurred and that you are the person who committed them, Orfinger said.

Sheriff Chitwood told Spectrum News 13 that the group home is “a complete failure and a disgrace.” Spectrum reported that Volusia County residents are used to runaways from the home hiding on their property.
Two children open fire on deputies with AK-47s in Florida
Two foster children broke into a Volusia County home, Tuesday night, then used guns they found inside the residence including an AK-47 to repeatedly fire at deputies for about 30 minutes, according to sheriff’s officials.
The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office said 12-year-old Travis O’Brien and 14-year-old Nicole Jackson face felony charges of attempted first-degree murder of law enforcement officers and armed burglary.
The girl ran at the deputies with a shotgun and is critically wounded.
The boy appeared before a judge and is held for 21 days until the next court date.
