If you think about it, there is probably not a more important word any of us can utter than the word teacher.
Each of us carries a little part of every teacher we ever had with us throughout our life. Sure, first responders, military members and healthcare workers are critically important to society. However, let s not forget those who prepared and enabled them to become these heroes of humanity.
I think back to when a young 22-year-old, first-time teacher named Phyllis Hasty taught my 6th grade classmates and me at Florosa Elementary School, located in southwest Okaloosa County. Ms. Hasty not only taught us English, she also taught us through her own classroom example, how to have compassion for those less fortunate than ourselves.
According to the FHP, the driver of a white pickup truck failed to notice the other vehicles stopped in traffic and collided with the rear of the SUV. The impact pushed the SUV into the rear of the car.
The white pickup, which was driven by a 50-year-old Panama City man, came to a rest in the left lane blocking traffic.
The blue SUV, which was occupied by two women from Biloxi, Mississippi, ages 51 and 35, came to a rest in the right lane facing west.
The small black car came to a rest in the left lane. The occupants of that vehicle were two women, ages 68 and 47, and two men, ages 55 and 42, all from Pensacola.
Shortly before 11:30 a.m. a witness called 911 stating that a white Honda sedan with pink rims was driving recklessly in the area of State Road 85 and College Boulevard and the passengers inside the vehicle were motioning for help.
The caller followed the vehicle to the Hideaway area of Valparaiso where it stopped. Deputies arrived and located the vehicle but Barnes had fled on foot into the woods. Both passengers, an adult woman and juvenile male, were unharmed.
The OCSO, Niceville Police Department, Valparaiso Police Department and Florida Highway Patrol established a perimeter and took Barnes into custody following a brief foot chase.

CRESTVIEW Multiple roads in the city are closed due to flash flooding, according to a Crestview Police Department Facebook post.
Around 11:30 a.m., CPD reported that Antioch Road is closed between Juniper Creek and PJ Adams Parkway. Additionally, Valley Road is closed between First Avenue and Tiffot Court.
Motorists are asked to use extreme caution on North Ferdon Boulevard from Hammock Drive to Airport Road. Water is covering the roadway and some lanes are completely impassable.
Drivers are reminded not to cross roadways that are completely submerged.
