Alachua County COVID-19 cases decline, good news to celebrate locally

“This is all very, very good news,” he said.   And he said the lower cases numbers aren’t a result of fewer residents taking COVID-19 tests. “We’re testing as much if not more than we were back in August,” Myers said.  So far, more than 45,000 people have been vaccinated in Alachua County. Myers said the Florida Department of Emergency Management is preparing to OK the next group of vaccine recipients, who are likely to include law enforcement, firefighters and teachers.  “I’m not sure when this is going to happen or if there are other groups that will be included,” Myers said. “But we are well-positioned to do mass vaccination clinics in Alachua County as long as the supply holds up.” 

Florida Legislative Session Opening Not So Festive During Pandemic

The House and Senate typically hold a festive joint session in the House chamber to hear the State of the State address. But in a memo to senators this week, Senate President Wilton Simpson, R-Trilby, said the Senate will stay in its chamber during the March 2 session opening and watch DeSantis’ address on a big video screen.
