Florida recyclers take a back to basics approach to public education

Florida is taking a “back to basics” approach to recycling education  to help it meet its 2020 goal of reaching a 75% recycling rate, stakeholders said during a panel discussion the Florida Recycling Partnership Foundation hosted on May 18. While officials are still compiling data for 2020, they say it’s unlikely Florida met the 75% goal. Florida’s 52% overall recycling rate in 2019 was a slight improvement over the 49% rate in 2018, said Karen Moore, environmental administrator of waste reduction for the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.​ Yet Florida s recycling rate has generally declined since 2016. Speakers at the event said they are tackling the issue through education programs aimed at students and the general public.Education is just one piece of the larger puzzle to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and keep more material out of landfills and incinerators, speakers acknowledged, but residents that follow the recycling rules still make a big impa

CEPD approves contractor for beach project, more By TIFFANY REPECKI / trepecki@breezenewspapers.com - | May 18, 2021 The Captiva Erosion Prevention District’s commission decided on the contractor, bank for the municipal bond loan and bond counsel for the beach renourishment project at its recent meeting. On May 10, the commissioners voted 4-0 to accept the recommendation of both its staff and consultants to award the bid for the upcoming project to Great Lakes Dredge & Dock. APTIM Coastal Planning & Engineering and Coastal Protection Engineering a subcontractor for APTIM had previously provided the CEPD with a bid recommendation letter, which staff concurred with. Vice Chair John Silvia had an excused absence from the meeting.
