Along with toxic red tide blooms, a nontoxic cyanobacteria that blooms annually in the Gulf of Mexico has also been reported in the past week or so. Red tide algae blooms have been detected recently in Charlotte, Lee and Collier counties. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said in its Friday report that low concentrations of the red tide organism Karenia brevis were detected in Hillsborough, Manatee and Sarasota counties.

Destin to host ribbon cutting, grand opening

The park is named after the founder of Destin, who came from New London, Connecticut, in the mid-1800s to establish a fishing village along the Florida Gulf Coast. It is located on the same plot of land as the original homestead of its namesake at 101 Calhoun Ave.  “The allure of East Pass that brought Leonard Destin here almost 200 years ago still exists today, it’s why each of us has chosen Destin to be our home. NSBCC Agenda – Shark Statues, Special Events, & The 4th Of July

May 10, 2021 | 4:25 PM New Smyrna Beach, FL – The first presentation at today’s New Smyrna Beach City Commission (NSBCC) meeting has been long in coming. The members of the Youth Council Task Force first presented their idea to the City Commission on May 14, 2019.  The students were not able to move forward last year due to the pandemic and meeting restrictions. This year, they accepted submittals from local artists to volunteer to paint a shark statue. The idea is to place them around the city of New Smyrna Beach. Other items on the agenda include: With pandemic restrictions easing, the NSBCC is expected to give approval to four special events including fireworks display on July 4 and, along Flagler Avenue, the 32nd Annual Seaside Fiesta on June 17, NSB Shrimp & Seafood Festival on Aug. 5, and Light Up Flagler on Dec. 3.
