Treasure Coast Newspapers FORT PIERCE A 36-year-old man accused in a sexual battery of a woman at his apartment remained Tuesday in the St. Lucie County Jail on $300,000 bond, according to recently-obtained records and the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office. Robert Louis Scharfschwerdt, whose address was not disclosed, was arrested March 31 on felony charges including sexual assault-sexual battery, domestic battery by strangulation and false imprisonment in connection with incidents that happened the day prior. A woman told Fort Pierce police she agreed to meet with Scharfschwerdt at his apartment. She said she got there about 2 a.m. and they argued. She told investigators he hit and choked her and committed violent sexual battery acts against her.

West Melbourne mom sentenced to 50 years in killing of newborn twins A West Melbourne woman charged with killing her newborn twins three years ago was sentenced to 50 years in prison as part of a plea deal Tuesday.  Prosecutors agreed to drop first-degree murder charges and the death penalty in exchange for Rachael Thomas, 33, pleading guilty to two counts of second-degree murder before Judge Charles Crawford at the Viera courthouse.  Thomas was arrested April 15, 2018 after calling 911 to report a baby at her Laurel Oak Street home was unresponsive.  I had a baby, and then I passed out. Now the baby s not responding and I don t know what to do, Thomas told 911 dispatchers when she called that day at noon. It s not doing anything. It s cold and it s blue.

A Florida woman who spent time in prison for a fatal crash years ago was traveling over 100 mph Sunday morning when she caused another terrifying wreck, killing one of her passengers and leaving two others seriously hurt, authorities said. Jennifer Carvajal, 24, was driving on Interstate 4 in Hillsborough County around 1:30 a.m. when she sped past a state trooper who clocked her three times going at 111 mph, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. As the trooper was trying to pull her over, the Tampa woman made a right turn and crashed her Hyundai Elantra into the shoulder.
