SeaWorld Committed to Combating Coral Reef Disease in Florida

(Photo : SeaWorld Committed to Combating Coral Reef Disease in Florida) The Florida Reef stretches approximately 360 miles from Dry Tortugas National Park west of the Florida Keys to the St. Lucie Inlet in Martin County. This area faces imminent danger from an outbreak of coral disease termed stony coral tissue loss disease. Already in decline due to degraded water quality, climate change, and an expanding South Florida population, the reef has become the focus of a crisis intervention led by dozens of partners from federal, state, and local agencies; non-governmental organizations; universities; and members of the community.  SeaWorld is among those actively combatting this destructive disease in an ongoing effort to support and protect the environment. Historically, SeaWorld has established numerous resources and funds to help support environmental conservation. CFK s Gueverra guides more than students

BIG PINE KEY — The College of the Florida Keys President Jonathan Gueverra has faced significant challenges since taking the reins at the college nearly a decade ago, but none like what he has faced in the past year with the COVID-19 pandemic. But Gueverra and college staff have risen to the occasion. The pandemic has not only given the college’s nursing students real-life experience, but the college has played an important role in battling the virus locally. On Sunday, Feb. 7, more than 400 people were vaccinated at the college by 38 nursing students and seven college staff, as CFK hosted the first mass vaccination event in the Keys. The college partnered with the local offices of the Florida Department of Health on the project. Another 300 vaccinations were planned for this past Sunday.
