Lower vegetable prices push inflation down for January

iStock image Vegetable prices have fallen by an average 17.8 per cent over the month of January, resulting in the downward movement of Jamaica’s inflation rate for the first month of the year 2021. The inflation rate for January 2021, as measured by the All Jamaica Consumer Price Index (CPI), was -1.6 per cent, according to data released by the Statistical Institute of Jamaica (STATIN). The movement in the inflation rate was mainly attributed to a fall of 4.6 per cent in the index for the heaviest weighted division, ‘food and non-alcoholic beverages’ and a 0.8 per cent decrease in the index for the ‘housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels’ division.
