On Wednesday, April 28, Park County reported 22 new cases of COVID-19, one of the largest single day increases recently.
Through contact tracing the public health department was able to discover the majority of those cases were due to individuals who arrived from out of state and had tested positive.
Park County Public Health Officer Dr. Aaron Billin said all those individuals are currently quarantining, and the new cases have slowed. But we anticipate more speed bumps in the road to recovery that will be similar to this, said Billin. So we just have to be very vigilant for the long run and adjust our public health policy as we go along.
After weeks of consistent decline, COVID-19 cases are starting to increase in Park County once again – right as the first tourists of the summer arrive.

Both Powell and Cody have the official approval from the Wyoming Department of Health for students and staff to go maskless in the classroom.
Park County Public Health Officer Dr. Aaron Billin announced the variance, requested by the Park County School District #1 Board of Trustees, was approved by the Wyoming Department of Health. Now, Powell students can go to class without a mask.
According to Dr. Billin, the variance was approved by Park County Public Health on Wednesday, April 28. After review by the department and State Health Officer Alexia Harrist, the state approved the request on Thursday, April 29.

The State of Wyoming approved a mask variance for all Cody schools – but students, staff, and visitors still need to wear masks in certain spaces and places.
Cody students and teachers can now choose to go to class without a mask. Park County Public Health Officer Dr. Aaron Billin announced the variance, requested by the Park County School District #6 Board of Trustees, was approved by the state on Friday, April 23.
“The School Board of Park County School District #6 has requested an exception to State Public Health Order #1 that allows PCSD #6 to make mask-wearing in school OPTIONAL. At the request of the School Board – this applies to mask use during the school day in school buildings and classroom settings and not to sporting events and other activities such as band concerts.”

The Park County School District #6 Board of Trustees applaud the strength of staff and students but agree it’s time to ask for maskless classrooms in Cody.
During a routine meeting of the Board of Trustees, there was anticipation in the board room. This stemmed from two items on the board’s agenda: the survey results and a vote on Cody schools requesting a variance from the Wyoming Department of Health.
When the state extended the remaining public health orders on April 16, there were no additional amendments lessening restrictions. Currently, masks and physical distancing are required at all times in Wyoming’s schools.
