Winter in Park City has typically brought with it a recurring problem for area employers. With low unemployment rates and a high cost of living, finding seasonal workers to help staff up during the busiest time of the year has been difficult. Some employers paid a higher salary, while others got creative, offering flexible schedules so workers could hit the slopes every morning or afternoon.
This year, COVID-19 turned that reality on its head. Now, with the unemployment rate still elevated due to the pandemic, finding workers isn’t an issue. But all the other headaches still exist.
Given everything ski patrollers do, they deserve to be paid more than “a high school summer hire flipping burgers,” writes Russ Paskoski of Silver Springs.

Despite the continued shutdowns and economic uncertainty brought by the COVID-19, one market that flourished in 2020 was real estate. With interest rates at an all-time low and homes appreciating at a rapid pace, houses are selling faster than ever.
In most cities, inventory is depleted and bidding wars are common, yet in some parts of the country, there are large numbers of vacant homes. While many of these properties are located in tourist-centric regions that tend to have vacancies associated with seasonal vacation homes, there are also some towns with higher-than-average rental vacancy rates, homes that were recently sold but not occupied, or vacant houses that are currently for sale. There are also resort towns that might have a large number of vacant homes, but also have very low rental vacancies and struggle to provide affordable rental housing for their workforce.

Tucked into a renovated Masonic Hall, upscale Riverhorse on Main is “bought out morning, noon and night” during the Sundance Film Festival, says co-owner and chef Seth Adams, “doing different activations all day long whether it’s a movie premiere or just a cocktail party or a late-night event with a DJ or a band.”

High West Distillery Après Ski
Utah-based High West Distillery partnered with Park City Mountain Resort to create a snow globe-inspired après ski offering.
At the distillery’s Nelson Cottage outpost in Park City, High West has created heated snow globes that can accommodate up to eight people. The spaces offer panoramic views of the Wasatch mountains, which can be enjoyed alongside the High West Manhattan fondue, smoked Rocky Mountain trout, and the High West Hot Toddy.
