Dr. Silvia Rondon has been named as the new director of the Oregon Integrated Pest Management Center.
Rondon is a professor and entomology specialist at the Hermiston Agricultural Research and Extension Center. and has worked there since 2006. While her new director job has typically been done from Corvallis, she said she negotiated to work from HAREC for at least a couple of years so that she can also continue some of her work she has been doing in Eastern Oregon.
âOur entomology program will be kept going here at HAREC, maybe with some modifications,â she said.
The Oregon IPM Center, part of Oregon State University, works to provide farmers in Oregon with sustainable pest management options that are affordable but also reduce harm to humans and the environment. Its projects range from research to educational programs.

APPLE VALLEY, MN A study conducted by a 2020 Luther College graduate originally from Apple Valley has uncovered seven new species of moths never before found in Iowa, the college said.
Lena Schmitt worked with biology professor Kirk Larsen and collected over 12,000 moths from the forests and prairies surrounding Luther and found 99 species that had never been documented in Winneshiek County and seven that had never been seen in Iowa, the college said.

A Reddit post has gone viral about a tactic that some mail carriers might be using to prevent stings. User u/istrx13 says they re a mail carrier, and they ve found that putting dryer sheets inside mailboxes prevents wasps from shacking up inside.
