They also plan to conserve and encourage natural wildlife. Seeing this as a long-term learning project, the students’ aim is to help Bicester Technology Studio achieve Eco-Schools recognition by the end of the academic year. Student Mackenzie said: “I joined as I am passionate about the environment; hopefully we will achieve ‘eco-friendly school’ status and reduce our carbon footprint. Also, I hope to inspire other students to step up and fight global warming and climate change with us.” Eco-Schools is a charity that wants to engage young people in environmental education and action. It provides a seven-step framework that thousands of schools and colleges around the world use to introduce, manage and complete environmental actions in their organisation and local community.

Plans to make Oxford zero-carbon by 2040 have been welcomed by campaigners and politicians. Leaders and organisations across Oxford have pledged to achieve net zero carbon emissions across the city by 2040. A group of 21 leaders from the city’s universities, institutions and major businesses signed the Zero Carbon Oxford Charter at a summit co-ordinated by Oxford City Council. It was attended by both universities, both hospital trusts, businesses including BMW, Unipart and LandSec, transport providers, schools and colleges plus the county council. The council’s scientific adviser Nick Eyre, professor of energy and climate change at Oxford University, told the summit the 2040 net zero date was technically achievable and ambitious. A detailed road map towards the target will be published this summer.
