The other students suffered minor injuries, Superintendent Peggy Mathis told MLive/The Grand Rapids Press.
The incident happened Monday morning, March 8.
Mathis said that she was awaiting information on the extent of injuries suffered by the student who allegedly ignited the “explosive compound.”
Police are investigating the incident. The state police Bomb Squad responded to the high school.
The explosion damaged a desk in the classroom.
Students were evacuated then sent home because of the odor and smoke inside the school.
“Our first priority is the safety of all of the kids,” Mathis said.

A 16-year-old student in Michigan accidentally detonated a homemade explosive that he brought to school Monday, injuring himself and four others.
Police officers were dispatched to the Newaygo High School following an explosion inside the classroom Monday morning. High School Administration dialed 911 and emergency services arrived on the scene. The school was immediately evacuated, and students were transferred to the bus garage. All Newaygo County Schools went into lockdown according to the county emergency operations plan until information was obtained that there were no further threats to students, Newaygo Police Department tweeted.

A teacher and five students were treated for injuries after one of the students inadvertently ignited a homemade explosive device inside a Michigan high school’s classroom, authorities said.
Police responded to reports of the explosion shortly before 9 a.m. on Monday at Newaygo High School located in the small rural city of Newaygo, Michigan. They found the 16-year-old student who accidentally set off the device with moderate to severe injuries from the blast, according to

Four other students who were inside the classroom at the time of the explosion were treated for minor injuries, and the teacher later went to the hospital for evaluation.
