A 57-year-old inmate was found unresponsive in his cell Friday after an apparent medical episode at the Bexar County jail.
Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said the man, who was being held on murder and aggravated kidnapping charges, was on life support as of Friday afternoon.
He said investigators were looking into the incident to determine what happened.
“We’re hoping he makes a recovery from this episode, but we’re handling it such that just in case that doesn’t happen, we’ll be prepared to handle the rest of the investigation,” Salazar said.

SAN ANTONIO A former deputy within the Bexar County Sheriff s Office was one of three suspects indicted on charges connected to an alleged smuggling scheme inside the Bexar County Detention Center.
Thomas Lucero, 29, faces a third-degree charge. Another suspect, Gabriel Moreno, is an inmate currently housed at the Texas Department of Corrections and is being brought back to San Antonio. The third suspect, Maricela Leija, a former nurse with University Health System, has not been apprehended. Sheriff Javier Salazar said law enforcement is actively searching for her.

SAN ANTONIO Police arrested a recently-hired Bexar County Sheriff’s Office employee overnight who is accused of driving while intoxicated. According to BCSO, Abigail Colbert, 24, was a temporary jailer.
The San Antonio Police Department arrested Colbert at 2 a.m. on Tuesday for DWI. According to BCSO, Colbert was previously assigned to the Bexar County Adult Detention Center, and had been employed since February of 2021.
