The first business of new the Assembly election of the new Speaker was held under a cloud of confrontation that was indicative of the mood and tone of Bengal’s politics likely to hold for the next five years.
On Saturday, Biman Banerjee was elected unopposed as the Speaker of the state Assembly for the third term, with the main Opposition BJP staying away from the proceedings to protest post-poll violence in the state. Out of 294 Assembly seats, elections were held in 292 with Trinamul winning 213 seats and the BJP 77.
Taking a dig at the BJP’s stance, chief minister Mamata Banerjee told the House that for most of the Opposition MLAs victory was courtesy the Election Commission of India. The people have boycotted them (Opposition MLAs). Without the EC’s help they could not have won 30 seats,” she said.

After Kangana Ranaut’s Twitter account got permanently suspended for posting a series of tweets that could incite violence amongst communities, a TMC spokesperson Riju Datta has lodged an FIR against the actress in Kolkata’s Ultadanga police station. The FIR has been lodged based on Kangana allegedly instigating communal disharmony and giving a hate speech through the social media platform. Riju alleged that Kangana has given a hate speech against the TMC party after they won the Bengal elections over BJP. Kangana had tweeted mentioning Prime Minister about stopping the ‘gundai’ in Bengal with ‘super gundai’
Delhi has said it needs 976 metric tonnes of oxygen per day during the Covid crisis (File)
New Delhi:
Oxygen supply to Delhi was short by 153 metric tonnes on Thursday, the Arvind Kejriwal government said this evening, as its tug-of-war with the centre over providing oxygen to critically ill patients during the second Covid wave spilled over into a new day.
The Delhi government s oxygen bulletin said the national capital had received 577 MT of oxygen yesterday, against a demand of 976 MT. The city received 730 MT on Wednesday.
There was a decline of 153 MT in 24 hours, the state government said.
This morning 4.14 lakh new cases were reported in 24 hours, taking the active case load past the 35.7 lakh mark. Of the new cases, around 21,000 were from Delhi and over 18,000 from Bengal.
Mamata Banerjee accused central leaders of inciting violence in the state

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said 16 people have lost their lives in post-poll violence in the state, and announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh each for their families.
Ms Banerjee, during a press meet here, also said that her government will provide jobs of home guard to one family member each of all five persons killed in CAPF firing in Cooch Behar s Sitalkuchi area last month.
She further said that a CID team has initiated a probe into the incident of firing in Cooch Behar that took place when the voting exercise was underway for the fourth phase of assembly elections, on April 10.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday blamed the BJP for post-poll violence in the state saying their leaders are visiting the state again and again provoking violence. Mamata s remarks has come after a 10-member BJP delegation, led by state BJP chief Dilip Ghosh, met the team from Home Ministry at the BSF office in Kolkata today.
Mamata Banerjee said, BJP leaders are roaming around, they are provoking. It s not even 24 hours of the new government, they are sending letters, teams and leaders are coming. They are actually not ready to accept the mandate. I request them to accept people s mandate.
