Bengaluru hospitals face oxygen shortage, send SOS

Express News Service BENGALURU: A day after three hospitals were on the verge of running out of oxygen and 24 Covid patients died without oxygen at Chamarajanagar District Hospital, Rajmahal Vilas Hospital in Sanjayanagar, Bengaluru wrote to the BBMP seeking an immediate supply of oxygen. “Universal Air Products is our vendor and despite our repeated request, has not supplied liquid oxygen and we are personally going to the factory to get bulk type and B type cylinder filled up. Even this is taking a couple of days to get delivery. In this scenario, managing 30-plus Covid patients (both BBMP and private) is becoming a challenge,” the hospital said in a letter to Dr Vedavathy, BBMP East Zone official.

The government has urged people to remain indoors and opt for home delivery wherever possible. In keeping with Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai’s description of the weekend curfew as ‘similar to last year’s lockdown’, severe restrictions will be imposed on the movement of people; all non-essential travel is banned.

In a press release, the BMRCL has said that on week days, the train services will start as usual at 7 a.m. but the last services from the terminal stations - Nagasandra, Silk Institute, Mysuru Road and Baiyappanahalli metro stations - will depart at 7 .30 p.m. “The last services will have connecting trains at Kempegowda Metro Station to another line,” states a press release. The State government has imposed weekend curfew till May 4.

Seth replaces Tarun Bajaj, who moved as Revenue Secretary in the Ministry of Finance. Ajay Seth takes charge as the new Secretary of Department of Economic Affairs (DEA), Ministry of Finance, in New Delhi today, the Finance Ministry said in a tweet. Appointments Committee of the Cabinet headed by the Prime Minister on April 6 appointed Seth as the new Economic Affairs Secretary. Shri Seth is a 1987 Batch Indian Administrative Service officer of Karnataka Cadre. Mr Seth previously held charge as Managing Director of Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited, another tweet said. In his previous stint at the Finance Ministry, Seth served as Deputy Secretary and Director in the Department of Expenditure and Department of Economic Affairs between 2000 and 2004. He served as Adviser to executive director Asian Development Bank during 2004-2008.
