MAN CAUGHT: An 18-year-old man was caught and taken to the Calhoun County jail after driving recklessly Sunday. Calhoun County Sheriff Department deputies said they saw a car about 9:10 p.m. on Morgan Road near North Avenue in Pennfield Township driving recklessly and nearly striking other vehicles at the intersection. When the deputy attempted to stop the vehicle the driver fled. At one point the fleeing car went off the roadway and into a ditch but drove back on the roadway and continued. The vehicle then turned south on North Washington Avenue and the deputy ended the pursuit because the vehicle was speeding through a residential area. Deputies later found the car had overturned in a yard on North Washington Avenue near Ardmoor Drive in Bedford Township but the driver had fled on foot. Driver killed in crash with utility pole in Monroe County Updated Mar 08, 2021; MONROE COUNTY, MI – A Monroe County man was killed early Saturday morning when his car left the road and hit a utility pole in Bedford Township. Nathan James Mahrt died March 6, in the single-vehicle crash on Summerfield Road east of Douglas Road in Bedford Township, north of the Ohio boarder, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. Mahrt, 35, of Lambertville, was driving a silver 2020 Nissan 370Z at 3:46 a.m. south on Douglas Road when he lost control of his vehicle while turning on to Summerfield Road, police said. His car crashed into the utility pole and tree before coming to a stop, police said.
