Art week in South Coast starts may 7 in New Bedford

NEW BEDFORD – Art will be overwhelming the SouthCoast starting May 7. A ten-day artistic adventure, connecting communities from Fall River to Wareham, will be a reminder that art is still thriving amid the pandemic and maybe ignite future artists. “I hope we can inspire people to experiment with their creativity,” said Jodi Stevens, executive director of the Marion Art Center. Stevens teamed with Anthi Frangiadi, owner of The Drawing Room and Lee Heald, the director of AHA! New Bedford, to create this inspiring artistic tour. “I hope that people will realize that there are still ways to enjoy the art, even during what we re experiencing now,” Stevens said.

NEW BEDFORD – Imagine a time when stories of New Bedford and surrounding towns on the Southcoast were told not in newsprint, but in glossy magazine covers and pages. You’d find yourself going back 40 years when New Bedford Magazine launched its premiere issue.  New Bedford Magazine launches in 1981 A closeup of the New Bedford Whaling Museum s domed cupola on the cover announced the very first issue of New Bedford Magazine in spring 1981. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the magazine s founding. Over the several years the magazine was in publication, the covers presented familiar local scenes like seagulls, fishing boats, harsh winter landscapes, art work, and landmarks like the New Bedford working waterfront or Battleship Cove in Fall River.  

DVIDS - News - NUWC Division Newport visual information specialist wins first place in Navy Media Awards

6 NEWPORT, R.I., – Kerri Spero of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Division Newport Graphics and Digital Imaging Branch of the Corporate Operations Department has won first place in the Russell Egnor Navy Media Awards Graphic Design-Digital Art category. This highly competitive, Navy-wide awards program recognizes exceptional work by individuals and communications teams throughout the Navy, and fosters an environment of innovation and growth that leads to more effective communication programs. This is the second consecutive year in which Spero, a resident of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, has won in this awards program. The winning nomination package included a series of four calendar illustrations designed to celebrate women in STEM careers, and depicted in each illustration is a building located on the NUWC Division Newport campus.

They re able to bridge the connection of sound waves, said Misti Nordstrom, sixth-grade math and science teacher. For students to learn about frequency of waves, they re really surprised to learn that sound travels faster through water than air. © Submitted photo Misti Nordstrom uses her doc camera to project the effect that a tuning fork will have on water once a vibration begins. Distant learners and in-person students experience the demonstration simultaneously and record observations in their virtual notebooks.

NEW BEDFORD  Sixth-graders at the advanced level at Keith Middle School have teamed up with the New Bedford Whaling Museum in a pilot program to understand how sound waves travel through different media. They re able to bridge the connection of sound waves, said Misti Nordstrom, sixth-grade math and science teacher. For students to learn about frequency of waves, they re really surprised to learn that sound travels faster through water than air. So far, Nordstrom said students are most excited about sperm whale communication and how whales use different clicking noises and patterns for different expressions. Some are for safety reasons, some to capture prey.
