Dublin GAA superstar Carla Rowe has praised Lidl s period poverty initiative and has spoken about its importance in a sporting context.
Yesterday, Lidl Ireland announced that they are to become the first major retailer in the world to offer free period products in stores nationwide, reports Dublin Live.
The new initiative is in partnership with Homeless Period Ireland and The Simon Communities of Ireland and from 19 April, online coupons will be available each month for a free box of sanitary pads or tampons.
They have also committed to donate these products to The Simon Communities to ensure that those who may not have access to a smartphone can access these essential products.

LONDON, April 20 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Two supermarket chains in Ireland and Britain are offering free sanitary pads and tampons in a drive to tackle period poverty , which charities say has soared during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The initiative launching in May comes as the Irish parliament considers a scheme to make period products free for anyone in need.
Last November, Scotland became the first country to make pads and tampons free.
In Britain, local media said some branches of Morrisons supermarket have been giving out free period products under a discreet initiative whereby shoppers can ask staff for a package that Sandy has left for you .

Retailer Lidl Ireland says it is to offer free period products in its stores nationwide to women and girls affected by period poverty.
This is being done in partnership with Homeless Period Ireland and The Simon Communities.
It means people will be able to claim a dedicated coupon for a free box of sanitary pads or tampons per customer each month through the Lidl Plus app.
Starting April 19th, Lidl says those looking to get urgent access to period products can download the app and sign up.
They will receive a free monthly coupon starting on May 3rd, and then ongoing on a monthly basis.
