The Green River Police Department is receiving some help from the Women’s Club of Rock Springs.
The club hosted a bake sale at International Day in Rock Springs Saturday, selling cookies featuring the GRPD therapy dog Buddy, as well as dog scarves and pet treats. Jacki Allison, a representative of the group, said they raised $316 for the department’s dog fund. Currently, Buddy is the only dog the GRPD has, but the fund would go to provide for any dog utilized by the department.
Buddy specializes in providing support for people and is a distraction for those in crisis, helping both adults and children cope with traumatic events. People are allowed to touch, hold or pet Buddy as they recount traumatic events to investigators. Buddy is seven months old and lives with his handler, Det. Martha Holzgrafe. In his off hours, he enjoys playing fetch, looking for birds and relaxing on his bed.
There was a warmth in Rock Springs during the holiday season of 1990. A warmth from a devastating fire and a warmth from the hearts of those in the community who rallied around the charred remains of the Food Bank fire five days before Christmas.
In a report from the Daily Rocket-Miner, a fire broke out early Thursday morning on December 20, 1990, destroying thousands of dollars worth of Christmas gifts and food, which were scheduled to be distributed throughout the community.
Around 250 gift baskets were destroyed after the flames consumed them in the fire, which was started inside the food bank by space heaters that were plugged into cords that couldn’t handle the amount wattage.
