For some students in Vermont, it’s their new reality: As of last week, attendees of Burlington High School are now going to class in an abandoned Macy’s department store in an outdoor pedestrian mall. Last year, officials in the district found high levels of toxic polychlorinated bipehnyls, or PCBs, in the high school; students were learning at home anyway because of the pandemic. While the district figures out how to address the PCB problem, Burlington High School signed a short-term lease at the former Macy’s, which closed in 2018.
