IRMO, S.C. Local nonprofits are benefitting from two teenagers goal to do more in their community.
“If not me then who? If not now then when?” Those are the questions Haley Hix heard that encouraged her to work with another Spring Hill High School Junior, Carmela Johnson, to come up with ‘Project Warm Hearts.’
“We started out with a plan to do a drive for a local shelter every other month, and we called it Project Warm Hearts. Basically, we connect with shelters locally and our ultimate goal is to one day possibly to be able to have our own nonprofit organization. So, this is our way of finding out a way to connect with our community, Hix told Street Squad.

JONESBORO, Ark. (KAIT) - Take a drive through Jonesboro, and you might see coats tied to trees, playground equipment, and utility poles.
It’s not a new way of decorating, but a cool way of keeping people warm.
Volunteers with Project Warm spent Sunday morning distributing more than 60 coats in this unique fashion.
For those who need a coat, they say take it. There is no shame or reason to feel bad about getting one.

A Florida grand jury on Tuesday issued four indictments for first-degree murder–two in connection with the shooting death of Deon O’Neal Jenkins, 25, at a Palm Coast convenience store parking lot in 2019, and two in the unrelated deaths of Dimitry Popkov, 39, last September, and Michael Joseph Burnett Jr., 33, in June 2018, both from fentanyl overdoses.
The indictment of Marcus Avery Chamblin, a 26-year-old Palm Coast resident, in Jenkins’s death was expected. Chamblin was arrested two weeks ago following a 15-month investigation in the killing, along with Derrius Braxton Bauer, 26. But Bauer, a Jacksonville resident who formerly lived in Flagler and went to school here, was initially charged with principal to first degree murder.
Alliance firefighters coordinated with the University of Mount Union to collect hundreds of blankets for people in need this winter.
Donations were amassed at the fire stations on East Broadway Street and South Union Avenue and in boxes located throughout Mount Union s campus from Nov. 9 to Dec. 18. On Friday, the blankets collected at Mount Union were brought to the station on East Broadway Street.
Alliance Firefighter and Project Warm Blanket Coordinator Chris Waffler said the blankets will be distributed to domestic violence shelters and families in need in the Alliance area. Additionally, he said some blankets will be kept on the firetrucks so that firefighters can hand them out if they notice people who may need them while driving through the city.
