The unanimous decision by the jury is being viewed as a sign of progress by many allies and activists alike around the Sunshine State. Community leaders, organizers and activists all spoke out immediately following the reading of the verdict with their initial thoughts. We can taste justice in America today,  said Sarasota activist, mother and Black Lives Matter Manasota board member Sarah Parker. She called the verdict a small victory in a very long battle  for racial and social justice.  Having justice served in a system that we have little or no faith in, it is surprising, Parker explained. This conviction does remind us why we are in this fight. As a Black woman, with children, sometimes we need that refresher, these moments, to remind us why we re doing this.

George Floyd family attorney Ben Crump hopes Chauvin verdict sets precedent for future justice TaMaryn Waters, Tallahassee Democrat Replay Video UP NEXT TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – With the world watching, civil rights attorney Ben Crump celebrated with George Floyd s family after the guilty verdict for former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin.  Chauvin was found guilty of second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in the death of Floyd, who died on May 25, 2020, when Chauvin knelt on the unarmed Black man s neck during an arrest outside a corner store in Minneapolis.  Crump expressed optimism about the verdict, saying he hopes it serves as a precedent for the future. 

Tallahassee teacher charged with sexual assault of minor

A teacher at Bethel Christian Academy was arrested last week on charges he sexually assaulted a 17-year-old runaway girl he solicited through a text message app in February, court records show.  Denzel Bonner, 30, was charged with sexual assault of a minor, use of a two-way device to facilitate a felony and engaging in prostitution. He was arrested on a warrant on April 13. Bonner, of Tallahassee, is physical education and health instructor at the preK-5 school, which is a ministry of Tallahassee s Bethel Missionary Baptist Church.  He has also worked in various afterschool programs in the Leon County Schools system. An LCS spokesman said Bonner worked in the afterschool program at Hartsfield Elementary for two years before leaving in March 2020.
